The story flashed back to the 1300s, where a king named Charlemagne was playing chess with a duke. The chess set was from the middle east. The board and pieces were made from silver and gold, and had jewels in them. Then the story flashed back to its normal time period, France in the 1700s. The head nun of the abbey told all the other nuns that the pieces and board of the chess set are in different places within the abbey, and that everyone had to find all the pieces.

The head nun of the abbey was originally going to just send Valentine, but decided that she needed Mireile needed to come with her. Meanwhile, the story switched to New York City, December, 1972. In that year, the main character is a women who just got a job at a major computer corporation. Her last name is Velis, her first name was never given.

The main character, Catherine, is at a hotel bar with her boss, his wife, and her brother. The brother-in-law tells Catherine that he knows that she will be going to Algeria in a few months, and that he will pay her a lot of money if she finds a rare, ancient chess board. The story that takes place in the 1700s and the "modern" story that takes place in 1972 are starting to tie together. Then her boss hires a fortune teller to read her palm, only because it's New Years Eve and they think it'll be fun. The fortune teller tells Catherine that she's in danger.

Cat went home, and was concerned that the fortune teller knew her birthday. Then the story switched back to Paris in the 1700s. The two main characters from that part of the story, Valentine and Merielle have left the abbey and are now living with their uncle, a famous painter. A new character shows up, he's a bishop, but the nun from the abbey warned the girls that he's evil. They later decide that he seems normal and start talking to him.

When they went back home, they were talking to the bishop for a little while. They discovered that their abbess went to Russia so she could meet someone of nobility. The story is going to switch back to New York in 1973 soon.
